The short answer

A warning light reports a condition the car has detected. It is not a complete diagnosis. Read its exact meaning and required action in the manual for that vehicle, including whether the light is steady, flashing, or accompanied by a message.

Not every illuminated symbol means the same thing

Some dashboard indicators simply show that a feature is operating. Some lights appear briefly during a startup check. A scheduled maintenance reminder can indicate that service is due by time or distance. A fault warning indicates a different kind of information. Confirm the exact behavior in the vehicle’s manual.

Do not use color alone to decide whether it is safe to continue. Read the symbol, accompanying words, and specified action. For example, the cited Ford manual distinguishes an engine oil warning from a scheduled maintenance indicator and directs the driver to stop safely for certain engine warnings. That manual is an example, not instructions for every car.

A safe sequence for interpreting a warning: read the message, identify its meaning in the manual, take the required safe action, and obtain diagnosis.

A check-engine light starts a diagnostic process

On-board diagnostics, or OBD, monitors specified engine and emissions functions. A detected condition can store a diagnostic trouble code, abbreviated DTC, and turn on a warning. A technician reads that information as part of investigating the problem. A code is evidence to interpret alongside tests and symptoms, not a universal instruction to replace one part.

A flashing check-engine light can indicate a serious misfire that risks damage to the exhaust catalyst. Follow the vehicle’s immediate instructions, move to a safe place when required, and seek assistance. A steady light should also receive the attention the manual specifies; steady does not automatically mean harmless.

What this means when buying

Check the startup sequence against the manual, then note any warning that remains. Ask the seller for repair records and have the independent inspector investigate unresolved warnings. If a warning makes a test drive unsafe, do not continue simply to complete the route.

Ask whether the inspection includes diagnostic codes and readiness status. Readiness describes whether an emissions monitor has completed its checks. An unready monitor leaves uncertainty; it is not the same as a completed test with no fault found. Required driving conditions vary by vehicle, so there is no single distance that proves all checks have run.

Common misunderstandings

Turning off a warning or clearing stored codes does not demonstrate that the cause has been repaired. Request evidence of diagnosis, the work completed, and appropriate checks afterward.

An oil-pressure warning is not simply an oil-change reminder. Do not assume that adding oil or resetting a service display makes continued driving safe. Follow the exact manual and obtain qualified help when instructed.
