The short answer
A timing belt or timing chain keeps the crankshaft and camshaft moving in the correct relationship. This makes the valves open and close at the right points in the pistons’ movement. Losing that relationship can stop the engine and, in some designs, cause serious internal damage.
Pistons and valves share carefully timed space
The crankshaft turns as the pistons move. The camshaft controls the valves that admit fresh air or mixture and release exhaust. A timing drive links these shafts. Its teeth or chain links preserve their relationship rather than relying only on friction between smooth surfaces.
In an interference engine, an open valve can occupy space that the piston reaches at another point in the cycle. Correct timing keeps them apart. If the timing drive fails or jumps far enough, they may collide. Not every engine has this arrangement, so the risk depends on the exact engine.

A chain still belongs to a system that can wear
A chain uses metal links. Guides control its path, and a tensioner manages slack. Some tensioners use engine oil pressure. Oil condition and the specified oil therefore matter to the timing system as well as to bearings and other moving parts.
Belts, chains, guides, tensioners, and related parts do not all have the same maintenance requirements. A visible belt driving accessories is not proof that you have found the timing belt. Many timing drives sit behind covers. Identify the system from documentation for the engine rather than from a quick glance under the hood.

Common misunderstandings
A timing chain is not a promise of maintenance-free ownership. It can wear, and surrounding parts can fail. Equally, a car with a timing belt is not automatically a poor choice if its required care is documented.
There is no replacement distance that fits every timing drive. The engine code and current manufacturer instructions matter more than a generic internet interval. Record an unresolved maintenance question explicitly instead of treating an absent invoice as evidence that the work was completed.
