The short answer
Payload concerns the load carried by the vehicle. Towing capacity concerns a permitted trailer load under specified conditions. A trailer also puts some load onto the tow vehicle, so the two limits interact. The exact vehicle, equipment, loading, and manufacturer instructions determine what is allowed. A headline towing figure is not a complete loading plan.
Carrying a load uses several allowances
People and luggage add load to the vehicle. Fitted accessories can also use some of the available allowance. The gross vehicle weight rating, abbreviated GVWR, sets a maximum loaded vehicle weight. Individual axle limits matter as well; staying below one total limit does not prove every other limit is satisfied.
Payload figures depend on the actual vehicle’s equipment and the definition used. Read its labels and documentation. An advertised maximum for a model family may describe a different configuration. Do not subtract a generic internet weight from a headline rating and assume the result is accurate for the car in front of you.

A trailer adds load at the coupling
A coupled trailer normally places downward load on the hitch. This tongue load counts against the tow vehicle’s available payload. The trailer’s complete loaded weight remains a separate figure. Coupling load is not permission to add the trailer’s entire weight to the car’s payload calculation, or to ignore it altogether.
Consider an illustrative remaining payload allowance of 500 kilograms. Occupants using 300 kilograms, cargo using 100 kilograms, and tongue load using 80 kilograms leave 20 kilograms. This arithmetic checks only that assumed allowance. It does not approve the combination or establish axle loads, hitch suitability, or trailer stability.

Common misunderstandings
A powerful engine does not override a weight rating. Cooling, braking, structure, tires, equipment, and the approved configuration all matter to the complete vehicle. A higher trim level does not automatically carry more load because additional equipment can use allowance.
An empty trailer’s weight does not describe it after loading. Equally, luggage volume does not state how much weight the vehicle can carry. Use consistent units and actual loaded values, and have any uncertain limit resolved before purchase rather than assuming that a comfortable test drive proves the combination is suitable.
