The short answer
Use a test drive to check how the car fits you and how it behaves in normal use. Record concerns for an inspector. A short drive cannot prove mechanical health.
Before you move
Agree permission, insurance arrangements, and a safe route with the seller. Check that you can adjust the seat, mirrors, and steering wheel to a comfortable position. Confirm that you can reach and understand the essential controls without stretching or distraction.
Look at warning lights as the car starts. Some light briefly as a check; use the owner’s manual to understand the exact behavior. If a safety warning remains or the car seems unsafe, stop the drive and seek assessment. This checklist is a practical observation aid, not a pass/fail certification.
During ordinary driving
Try normal pulling away, gentle braking, turns, parking, and a steady cruise where permitted. Listen for unusual knocks or scraping and notice pulling, vibration, delays, or harsh changes. Keep your attention on traffic and stop safely before writing notes.
Record what happened and when: “vibration during gentle braking” is more useful than “bad brakes.” Similar symptoms can have several causes. Do not perform high-speed or emergency tests on public roads to diagnose them. The underlying systems need professional examination.

Common misunderstandings
A smooth short drive does not prove that a car has no hidden fault. Temperature, journey length, and road conditions may affect whether a problem appears.
An unfamiliar transmission response is not automatically a defect. Check how that design is intended to behave, then ask an independent professional to assess the actual car.
